I am a professional freelance writer and Virginia native based in the mountains of Highland County.  Known as Virginia’s Switzerland, Highland has both the highest mean elevation east of the Mississippi and also one of the East’s smallest populations.  It is a place apart—a landscape rich with solitude, timelessness, and open space.

I grew up on a small farm just east of Shenandoah National Park and spent the early years of my adult life in the Tidewater region of Virginia, where I worked for a couple of years as an adjunct professor of English and later as a copywriter for a Norfolk advertising agency.  Several years ago, I returned to the mountains of my childhood and began writing full-time.

While Highland is home base for me, I also spend a great deal of time on the road as a travel writer with most of my coverage occurring domestically in the southeast and mid-Atlantic with a special focus on the southern mountains.  I have written professionally for over 10 years.

In that time, I have written a wide array of news and feature articles not only on travel, but also on outdoor recreation, environmental and social issues, government policy, wildlife conservation and management, home design, restoration, and construction, health and fitness, agriculture, history, culture, music, business and real estate.  My publication credits include national and regional magazines, major city newspapers, literary journals, online media, travel guides, and books
